Tom And Siwela Secure Third 2026 World Cup Assignment

South African match officials Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela have been appointed to officiate the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group F Matchday Two encounter between the Netherlands and Sweden at Houston Stadium on Saturday.

Tom will serve as the fourth official, while Siwela has been named reserve assistant referee for the highly anticipated clash. The duo will work alongside an English officiating team led by referee Michael Oliver, with Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring serving as the first and second assistant referees respectively.

The appointment marks the third World Cup assignment for the South African officials during the tournament. Their first match came on Sunday when they officiated the Group E encounter between Germany and tournament debutants Curaçao.

Their second assignment will be Wednesday’s clash between Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and the African representatives, DR Congo.

Tom and Siwela have maintained the same roles throughout the tournament, with Tom serving as fourth official and Siwela as reserve assistant referee in all three appointments.

Saturday’s fixture is expected to be one of the standout matches of the group stage, with both European nations targeting crucial points in Group F. The Netherlands are searching for their first victory of the tournament after being held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their opening match, while Sweden will look to build on an impressive start following a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia.

The upcoming encounter will be only the second FIFA World Cup meeting between the two nations. Their previous World Cup clash came during the group stage of the 1974 tournament in West Germany, where they played out a goalless draw.

Despite the Netherlands’ slow start to the tournament, recent history favours the Dutch. Their most recent meeting with Sweden came in October 2017 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier, with the Netherlands securing a 2-0 victory.

Across their last five meetings, the Dutch have enjoyed the stronger record, winning three matches. Among those victories were a convincing 4-1 triumph in October 2010 and a 3-1 win in an international friendly in 2008.

Sweden’s only victory during that period came in a UEFA European Championship qualifier in October 2011, when they recorded a 3-2 win.

With both teams eager to strengthen their positions in Group F, Tom and Siwela will once again be in the spotlight as they proudly represent South Africa on football’s biggest stage.
