Unbeaten Stormers Ready To Tackle Dangerous Lions

The Stormers are relishing the prospect of returning home to Cape Town as they prepare to face the Lions in a highly anticipated South African derby at DHL Stadium this weekend.

The Stormers have enjoyed a strong start to the season across both the United Rugby Championship and the Investec Champions Cup, but Stormers attacking coach, Dawie Snyman was quick to stress that their current form is the result of deliberate hard work.

“We’re in a good position, but it’s come from a lot of hard work,” he said.

“From the start of pre-season, we wanted to put ourselves in this position. It brings confidence to the group, but we don’t take it for granted. We’re tough on ourselves after every performance and training session, and we’ll keep pushing to improve,” Snyman elaborated.

The Lions beat the Stormers at DHL Stadium in the inaugural 2021-22 tournament, but since then, John Dobson’s side have won three in a row – and will be hoping to make it four.

Looking ahead to the challenge posed by the Lions, Snyman acknowledged the threat of a side capable of upsetting anyone on their day.

“They’re a good team. You don’t always go to Loftus and win, and they showed that two weeks ago. They have dangerous individual players who can hurt you if you’re not focused. South African derbies always have a sting, and we’re expecting a really tough game.”

Prop Neethling Fouche – who is set to play his 100th game for the Stormers – echoed those sentiments, particularly highlighting the physical battle up front.

“It’s a South African derby, and we all enjoy the scrum. There’s always an edge to it. We’ll give the Lions the respect they deserve and we’ll need to pitch up on Saturday,” said Fouche.

Snyman expressed his excitement about playing in front of the home crowd once again, following a recent outing in Gqeberha.

“We already got a taste of it this weekend in PE, but to play in front of our home crowd and be back at DHL will be special,” he said.

With the fixture falling in the festive season, Snyman is hopeful of strong crowd support for the 3pm kickoff – urging fans to back the unbeaten Cape side.

“In previous years, when we’ve played here over the festive season, we’ve had some great crowds. It’s a derby, there’s always an edge to it, and it’s a beautiful stadium. If you have the time, come out and support the team.”

Snyman also praised the influence of Springbok halfback pairing Cobus Reinach and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu following their recent outing together.

“The most pleasing thing was how seamless it looked. It was Cobus’ first start, but he looked like he’s been playing for the Stormers for a few seasons. They knew when to attack and when to control the game, and everyone around them looked comfortable. I was really pleased with how quickly they slotted in.”

On the injury front, Snyman confirmed that Damian Willemse is not yet fit but is close to making his return.

Jurie Matthee remains touch-and-go for inclusion in the matchday 23, with a final decision expected once medical reports are received on Tuesday.

With momentum building for the unbeaten Stormers and a fierce derby on the horizon, the Stormers will be eager to continue their winning ways and deliver a strong performance in front of their home supporters.
