Van Wyk Scores Debut Goal As Sundowns Hold Hertha Berlin After Emotional Delay
Mamelodi Sundowns began their pre-season tour of Austria with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against German Bundesliga 2 side Hertha Berlin at Union Mondsee Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Brazilians came from behind after Hertha Berlin took the lead in the 39th minute through Leon Jensen. Sundowns responded on the stroke of half-time, with new signing Antonio van Wyk marking his unofficial debut by finding the back of the net to restore parity before the break.
One of the standout moments for Sundowns was the appearance of Cassius Mailula, who has been heavily linked with a return to the club. The forward started on the bench before being introduced in the second half, giving supporters a glimpse of what could lie ahead should his return be finalised.
The encounter had initially been scheduled as Sundowns’ second fixture of their Austrian pre-season tour. However, their opening friendly against Austrian giants RB Salzburg, which was due to be played on Saturday, was postponed after the South African champions only arrived in Austria on Friday.
Sundowns had originally been scheduled to travel to Austria during the second week of July, but their departure was delayed following the passing of midfielder Jayden Adams. His death drew global attention, with a moment of silence observed in his honour before both FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
Miguel Cardoso’s side will continue their preparations for the 2026/27 season with two more friendly matches before returning to South Africa. Sundowns are set to face EFL Championship side Cardiff City on Wednesday before concluding their Austrian tour against Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hilal on Saturday.
