Vilakazi Magic Fires Chiefs To Historic Toyota Cup Victory
Kaizer Chiefs ended their Toyota Cup heartbreak by lifting the trophy for the first time with a 1-0 victory over Zimbabwean giants Scottland FC at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday evening.
After finishing as runners-up in the previous two editions, Amakhosi finally claimed the title thanks to a disciplined performance and a decisive first-half strike from youngster Mfundo Vilakazi.
The promising attacker proved to be the difference-maker, scoring in the 17th minute with a composed left-footed finish from inside the penalty area that beat the Scottland goalkeeper and ultimately secured victory for Fernando Da Cruz’s side.
Chiefs, however, suffered an early setback despite taking the lead. Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Cross, who recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was forced off through injury in the first half. He was replaced by Given Msimango, who slotted into the heart of the defence as Amakhosi preserved their advantage.
The victory marked a significant milestone for Chiefs after disappointing results in the first two editions of the competition. In 2024, they were beaten by Tanzanian giants Young Africans at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein before suffering another defeat to Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in 2025. Their triumph over Scottland finally ended their Toyota Cup hoodoo and secured the trophy at the third attempt.
The match also served as an important pre-season test for both clubs ahead of their continental campaigns. Chiefs are preparing to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup, while Scottland will feature in the CAF Champions League after qualifying for Africa’s premier club competition.
Although Vilakazi’s goal separated the sides at half-time, the second half was equally entertaining. Both teams played attractive attacking football and created several clear-cut chances, but neither could add to the scoreline as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Amakhosi.
Scottland bolstered their attack in the second half with the introduction of former Chiefs stars Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat. The experienced duo made a positive impact and looked dangerous in possession, but they were unable to inspire an equaliser as Chiefs’ defence stood firm.
Amakhosi also handed a debut to new signing Adolf Mtasingwa, who impressed with a composed display and completed the full 90 minutes. Fellow new arrivals Renaldo Learner and Thabo Moloisane remained unused substitutes, while promising reserve team youngster Kabelo Nkgwesa was introduced in stoppage time to gain valuable senior-team experience.
The victory provides Fernando Da Cruz with the perfect start to his tenure as Kaizer Chiefs head coach ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season. His first official competitive match in charge will come on 1 August when Amakhosi travel to Mpumalanga to face newly promoted Kruger United, looking to build on their historic Toyota Cup triumph with a winning start to the league campaign.
