Vilakazi On His Bay Future: Negotiations Will Decide
Richards Bay coach Vusi Vilakazi acknowledges that while chairman Sifiso Biyela seems inclined to keep the coaching staff and offer him a new contract, negotiations will ultimately decide his future.
Biyela, following their decisive win over Baroka FC that secured their PSL status, expressed his belief in maintaining the current coaching setup. He emphasized his cultural background, stating that “as a Zulu person, my ancestors would turn against me if I tampered with people’s careers.”
Vilakazi was appointed as Richards Bay coach in December after the departure of Kaitano Tembo, whom Biyela acknowledged was unfortunate with results. While Vilakazi took over when the team was near the bottom of the table, their league position remained unchanged at the end of the season.
However, they excelled in the promotion/relegation playoffs, winning two of their four matches and securing their place in the PSL for the next season.
“We still have to sit down and talk with the chairman,” said Vilakazi.
“Obviously, my contract has ended but we will sit down and see. He did say in a statement that ‘if it’s not broken, why fix it’?.
“But that will depend on the talk that we would have, the negotiations and also try and align the team in terms of personnel and who can we bring, who can we release and stuff.”
Following these demanding playoffs, Bay players will have a short break before returning to pre-season training on 3 July.
