Watenga Shines In Goaless Draw Against Mamelodi Sundowns

Golden Arrows goalkeeper Isima Watenga emerged as a hero on Wednesday, producing a string of superb saves to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 0-0 draw at Mpumalanga Stadium.
Watenga Thwarts Sundowns’ Attack
On loan from Sundowns himself, Watenga stood firm against his parent club, denying them a goal for the third time this season. Sundowns previously failed to score in goalless draws against Cape Town City and Polokwane City in December.
Despite already securing the league title last week, Sundowns dominated the first half in Hammersdale but couldn’t convert their chances. Arrows, last victorious over Sundowns in a 3-2 win in November 2019 under coach Steve Komphela, frustrated the champions with a disciplined defensive performance.
Watenga Denies Lorch, Costa and More
Thembinkosi Lorch sent a warning early on, denied from close range by Watenga in the fourth minute. Watenga continued to impress, making another crucial save on Lucas Ribeiro Costa shortly after. Aubrey Modiba and Matias Esquivel also came close for Sundowns in the first half, but Watenga remained unbeatable.
Arrows Threaten After Red Card
The game turned in Arrows‘ favor in the second half when Mosa Lebusa received a red card for a reckless tackle in the first minute. This forced Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena to reshuffle his side.
Nduduzo Sibiya and Nhlanhla Zwane threatened for Arrows, while Watenga continued to shine with a fingertip save over a Junior Mendieta effort. Sundowns kept pressing, with Watenga denying Mendieta again later in the game. Marcelo Allende was also thwarted by the impressive goalkeeper.
Arrows almost snatched a victory late on when Lungelo Nguse’s powerful strike went narrowly wide. Ultimately, Watenga’s heroics secured a valuable point for the home side.
