Johannes Heading To Pirates

SuperSport United defender Kegan Johannes is on his way to join Orlando Pirates next season.

According to Sportswire sources, Pirates have been looking for a consistent right back for the past two seasons, and Johannes fits the bill. Their current options at the position are limited due to injuries.

Thabiso Lebitso, their preferred right back, is highly unlikely to return this season after suffering a collarbone injury against Royal AM two weeks ago. Bandile Shandu has also been battling with injuries and hasn’t played since assisting the winning goal for Evidence Makgopa in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs last November.

With both Shandu and Lebitso out, Thabiso Monyane is the only remaining right back, but his form hasn’t been impressive either. He’s likely see more playing time until the season ends.

Pirates are aiming to strengthen their squad for their upcoming CAF club competition campaign next season, having secured qualification through their Nedbank Cup final appearance against Mamelodi Sundowns on 1 June at Mbombela Stadium.

The 24-year-old Johannes, who joined SuperSport from Cape Town Spurs in 2021, has established himself as a promising player. He captained the Bafana Bafana B team at the COSAFA Cup in Durban two years ago and also led the South Africa U23 team in the third-place playoff at the 2019 CAF U23 Championship in Egypt, where they lost to Ghana on penalties.

However, recent reports suggest Johannes signed a contract extension with SuperSport until 2026. This could mean a significant transfer fee for the Tshwane club of Johannes’ moves to Pirates.

As Sportswire has been told the deal is done, Johannes would be joining the club he scored against in a DStv Premiership match at Orlando Stadium in March 2022.

Johannes might not be the only SuperSport player joining Pirates next season. Midfielder Thalente Mbatha, who arrived on loan from SuperSport in January, has been instrumental at the Soweto giants, helping Jose Riveiro’s side reach the Ke Yona Cup final. He even scored his first PSL goal two weeks ago in their 4-0 win over Royal AM.
