Do You Know How Many Players Sundowns Have Signed From SuperSport?

Mamelodi Sundowns’ acquisition of defender Keegan Johannes from under Orlando Pirates’ noses marks the 19th player they’ve signed from SuperSport United in the PSL era.

Sportswire reported in May that Pirates were close to securing the defender from SuperSport, but Sundowns swooped in at the last minute with a more lucrative offer. This forced SuperSport to accept the highest bid, which came from Sundowns.

The Brazilians acted swiftly to finalize the deal before the closing of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup player registration window on Saturday. Johannes strengthens their right-back position, currently occupied by first-choice Khuliso Mudau, and adds depth alongside January signing Zuki Mdunyelwa from Chippa United.

The long list of Sundowns players hailing from their city rivals began with Paul Evans in the 1999/00 season. Calvin Marlin and Lungisani Ndlela followed in 2006/07, followed by Katlego Mphela and Siboniso Gaxa in the 2008/09 season after Gavin Hunt’s side clinched the first league winning title in the previous season.

Elias Pelembe joined in 2009/10, followed by cult hero Anthony Laffor in 2011/12, who scored in the first leg of the Champions League final for Sundowns in the 2026. Tebogo Langerman, another CAF Champions League final scorer in the first leg, arrived in 2012/13, with versatile defender Bryce Moon joining the following season. Towering Senegalese Mame Niang was another addition from SuperSport in the 2014/15 season.

Former SuperSport leading scorer Jeremy Brockie joined in the second half of the season 2017/18, but struggled to make a significant impact at Sundowns. Goalkeeper Reyard Pieterse arrived in 2018/19, followed by Aubrey Modiba in 2020/21. Grant Kekana joined in 2021/22, with Teboho Mokoena following six months later. In the 2022/23 season saw the signings of Ronwen Williams and Sipho Mbule, with Thapelo Maseko added last term.
