Williams: Champions League Win Would Inspire South African Youth

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is driven by more than just personal success as the Brazilians prepare to face Egyptian giants Pyramids in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final on Sunday at the 30 June Stadium (19:00).

For Williams, a win this evening would have a profound impact on the country and its youth, providing a much-needed boost of motivation and inspiration.

“To me, it will mean so much,” Williams said on SuperSport TV.

“Obviously, I can’t express how I will feel at that moment, but I just know what we did for the country and the youth of South Africa.”

Williams believes that success on the continental stage would have a ripple effect, inspiring young South Africans to strive for greatness.

The former SuperSport United goalkeeper pointed to the country’s recent successes in major sporting events, such as the Rugby World Cup, as evidence of the impact that achievement can have on the nation.

“A few years ago, South African sports did not have a lot of success,” he said.

“But the World Cup, the Rugby World Cup – back-to-back World Cup titles for the Springboks that inspired us, and we had a wonderful effort.”

A Sundowns victory in the CAF Champions League final would send a powerful message to the youth of South Africa, Williams believes.

“For us, doing well in the CAF Champions League final will give the youth and the country that extra motivation, and youth can achieve great things,” he said.

This game will be a thrilling encounter, with Sundowns looking to win their second Champions League title after their 2016 triumph over Zamalek.

Pyramids, on the other hand, are seeking to make history with their first-ever Champions League title.

The stakes are high, but for Williams and Sundowns, the potential reward goes beyond just the trophy – it’s about inspiring a nation and its youth to reach for greatness.

With the first leg ending in a 1-1 draw, the stage is set for an electrifying conclusion to the competition. Will Sundown emerge victorious, or will Pyramids create history? The world will be watching.
