Williams Excited To Be Amongst The Elite

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has shared his thoughts on his historical three nominations at the 2024 CAF Awards due to take place on Monday evening in Marrakech, Morocco.
After another clean sheet performance in an intense 1-0 winner against Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League group stage match on Sunday, the Mamelodi Sundowns’ captain traveled and landed in Morocco where he will learn his fate for his three nominations at African football’s most prestigious awards ceremony.
The 2024 Yashin Trophy nominee is gunning for the Goalkeeper of the Year, CAF inter-club Player of the Year, and the biggest award of the night, CAF Player of the Year.
In a contest with four European-based players, the 32-year-old is the only African-based player in the Player of the Year category where he will compete with Simon Adingra, Serhou Guiassy, Achraf Hakimi, and Ademola Lookman.
The South African player of the year reflected on what he described as a wonderful year and further shared his feelings building up to an important night in his career.
“I have settled in Marrakech, Morocco and I am looking forward to the CAF Awards ceremony tonight. I have been nominated for three awards, it’s been a wonderful year for me, it’s a proud moment and I am excited and happy to be amongst the elite,” remarked Williams.
The former SuperSport United captain will however also be representing his club and national team who are both nominated for Club of The Year and National Team of The Year.
Williams led his club to a record seventh consecutive league title in the South African topflight while playing an immense role in Bafana Bafana’s best CAF run in 22 years, taking third place and clinching the bronze medal in the delayed Africa Cup of Nationals that took place this year. His club Sundowns also won the African Football League title.
Speaking like a true skipper, Williams maintained the two team awards are the ones he looks most forward to over his three individual nominations.
“However, the awards that I am looking most forward to are the Club of The Year and the National Team of The Year. I feel like South African football has had an amazing year, we’ve done amazing work and put ourselves amongst the best. So, I hope and pray that we as Mamelodi Sundowns can get the Club of The Year and Bafana Bafana can get the National Team of the Year,” maintained the Ballon’Dor’s ninth-best goalkeeper in the world.
The PSL goalkeeper of the season concluded his remarks by sharing a message of gratitude for his support saying, “Thank you so much for all the well wishes. I have seen and heard all the messages and hope that I represent and make you all proud.”
