Winning Premier’s Cup Could Hold Significant – Maduka

Royal AM coach John Maduka expressed optimism that winning the KZN Premier’s Cup could signal a better season ahead for his team.
Given Royal AM’s FIFA-imposed transfer ban, the victory holds particular significance.
Thwihli Thwahla defeated Maritzburg United 4-3 on penalties to clinch the pre-season tournament at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Regional Stadium on Sunday. This marked Royal AM’s fourth KZN Premier’s Cup title, having previously won in 2022 and twice as Royal Eagles in 2016 and 2017.
“We hope to have a better season, as we know last season was challenging,” Maduka said. With a limited squad due to the transfer ban, Royal AM narrowly avoided relegation last term.
“Preparation is crucial,” he added. “Integrating young players into the team is important, and our experienced players must guide them. Winning this tournament boosts their confidence, but it’s essential to avoid complacency, as success can make things tougher.”
Royal AM reached the KZN Premier’s Cup final by defeating Milford 4-3 on penalties in the playoff stage. Their impressive 3-0 semifinal victory over AmaZulu was no surprise to Maduka.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Maduka assured. “We’re an ambitious team that strives to excel in every competition. We don’t see ourselves as a young or merely participating team. We aim to compete. Our young players were hungry against AmaZulu and delivered a strong performance.”
