Witbooi: We Showed Great Fighting Spirit

South Africa’s prodigious talent, Emile Witbooi, emphasized the team’s resilience in their comeback victory against Egypt at the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca on Monday.
The son of Surprise Ralani delivered a stellar performance, scoring twice in a dramatic comeback against the Young Pharaohs. Despite trailing 3-1, South Africa secured a breathtaking 4-3 victory.
Witbooi masterfully orchestrated the comeback, displaying remarkable maturity. From a perfectly weighted assist to the decisive winning goal, the Cape Town City FC midfielder dominated the match with vision, poise, and precision.
“It was an intense match, but we showed real character to come back and win,” said Witbooi, who was later named Man of the Match, on CAF online.
“I’m happy with our first game – the team stayed composed in tough moments and that gives us confidence going forward.”
The 16-year-old, who has trained with the Chelsea youth academy, made an early impact with a pinpoint left-footed assist for South Africa’s opening goal. However, it was his crucial winning goal that sealed his outstanding performance and the game.
“I love having the ball, organising the play, and helping my teammates get into the right positions,” said the soft-spoken Witbooi.
“We kept our composure and took our chances. This win reflects our mentality – we never give up.”
Witbooi acknowledged his teammates’ contributions while accepting the Man of the Match trophy.
“I want to thank the Almighty Lord first for giving me the opportunity to showcase, I want to thank the technical team, my coaches, my players because I alone I wouldn’t done this,” said Witbooi.
“I would like to thank my family at home for everything they have done for me. The boys came out and showed great fighting, so I’m happy.
“Thank you for the support, South Africa. Vamos!”
The result places South Africa alongside Burkina Faso, who also rallied to defeat Cameroon 2-1, at the top of Group B.
Amajimbos will now focus on their upcoming match against Cameroon on Thursday, while Egypt will seek redemption against Burkina Faso.
