Wydad Open Talks With Chiefs Target

Sportswire has confirmed that Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club have initiated talks with Kaizer Chiefs target Maxi Nzengeli, who is expected to leave Tanzanian champions Young Africans upon the expiration of his contract.

The left winger penned a two-year deal with Yanga in July 2023, joining from Congolese Linafoot Ligue 1 side AS Maniema Union. The DRC international won the league title in his first season with the club and is on course for a second successive championship in Tanzania.

In the ongoing 2024/25 campaign, Nzengeli scored five goals and registered nine assists in the Tanzanian Premier League. Interestingly, the player is second to another Amakhosi target, Feisal Salum, in the assists chart, with the Azam FC star having set up 13 goals.

The impressive performances have caught the eye of several clubs across the continent, as the 25-year-old winger, who can also play as a central midfielder, will be a free agent at the end of the season in Tanzania.

It’s understood that the Dar es Salaam-based outfit is still confident of retaining the player beyond the current term, with talks ongoing over a possible new deal. However, the two parties have yet to reach an agreement on a new contract.

Meanwhile, Naturena has been mooted as a potential destination for Nzengeli should he decide to reject Yanga’s fresh proposal to keep him in East Africa. Chiefs, alongside an unnamed Egyptian Premier League club, are believed to have registered a keen interest in the player’s services.

Moreover, a well-placed source close to the matter told this publication that Wydad has entered the race for Nzengeli’s signature. According to information gathered by Sportswire, the 22-time Moroccan champions held exploratory talks with the player’s camp in a bid to facilitate a move.

The Red Castle has already lured Stephane Aziz Ki from Young Africans to bolster the squad for the FIFA Club World Cup. With a plethora of options on his table, it remains to be seen which project will be more enticing for Nzengeli as the race remains open to all suitors.
