Tragedy struck Zambian football as African Cup of Nations winner Rainford Kalaba has been involved in a horrific car accident.

The 37-year-old winger has been hospitalized and is in critical condition, according to his former club TP Mazembe. Mazembe had earlier said Kalaba passed, before releasing another statement.

Kalaba enjoyed a trophy-laden career with TP Mazembe, clinching the CAF Champions League title in 2015. He also secured the CAF Super Cup twice (2011, 2016) and the CAF Confederation Cup twice (2016, 2017).

Dominating domestically, Kalaba lifted the Ligue 1 championship in Congo a staggering ten times. He also had a brief stint in Egypt with Zamalek, who finished runners-up in the 2009/10 season.

On the international stage, Kalaba played a pivotal role in Zambia’s 2012 AFCON triumph. He converted the seventh penalty in the shootout victory over Ivory Coast after a goalless draw after extra time. He had earlier found the net in Zambia’s 2-1 group stage win against Gabon, as they finished second in Group D.

With this Kalaba, will go down as one of the greatest players to ever grace the continent.
