Zwane Sets Sights On Historic Invincible Season
Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane insists the team won’t rest on their laurels despite clinching the league title weeks ago.
The 34-year-old midfield kingpin stressed the importance of securing a win against Cape Town City at Loftus Stadium on Saturday (15:00). He labeled it a “must-win game” as he set his sights on making history with the DStv Premiership champions.
The African giants are on the verge of etching their name in South African football history, provided they avoid defeat against City in their final game of the season.
The Brazilians are looking to become the first side in PSL history to achieve an invincible season. Rulani Mokwena’s charges are currently on a 29-game unbeaten run in the league with 73 points accumulated. This surpasses the 71 points the club managed under Pitso Mosimane in the 2015/16 season.
“Obviously for us it’s still an important game, a game that we need to win,” Zwane said. “We want to close the season properly with a win.”
“It’s a game that will help us make history. If we win, then we make history by never losing in the league. So it’s very important for us to go all out and try to win the game.”
In a season that saw the Brazilians break points tally records, winning a seventh consecutive league title, reaching two domestic cup finals, and reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals, Zwane took time to praise his coach, Mokwena, for the outstanding work the 37-year-old mentor has done so far.
“It’s been amazing working with Mokwena,” Zwane said. “He’s an amazing coach and an amazing human being. What I appreciate a lot about the coach is that as a player, you improve a lot when you work under him.”
“We appreciate him. We always learn. He always watches previous games so that he can improve us as players. He works hard and motivates us. We enjoy playing under him, and we are happy with the coach,” he added.
The Bafana international urged the Mamelodi Sundowns faithful to come out in numbers to the capital city on Saturday for what could be a historic day in the club’s history. The team will also be officially lifting the DStv Premiership trophy to be crowned champions.
“The message to our supporters is that I would like them to come out in numbers,” Zwane implored. “We always feel good when they are there in numbers. We just want to lift the trophy together, celebrate together, and close it in a nice way.”
