Zwane: We Want To Win All The Trophies
Mamelodi Sundowns captain kingpin Themba Zwane has issued a stern warning to MTN8 competitors, declaring the African giants’ aim to conquer all competitions.
Speaking at the MTN8 launch on Wednesday, Zwane, who saw his option exercised by Sundowns, was accompanied by coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
He outlined the team’s ambitions. Sundowns, fresh from their seventh consecutive PSL title, host Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinals next weekend.
The tournament, now in its 15th year under MTN sponsorship, has seen a significant prize money increase to R10 million.
Last season’s MTN8 final defeat to Orlando Pirates on penalties still stings, especially Zwane’s missed opportunity early in the game.
“To be honest, the goal remains the same – we always want to win all the trophies that we compete for,” said Zwane.
“We just want to improve the team to another level and yeah, we are going to push ourselves this season.”
Sundowns face a grueling season, including the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States next June. The team recently returned from a European tour in Austria.
Mngqithi now leads the team following the departure of Rulani Mokwena.
