Larsen Acknowledges Nerves Ahead of Sundowns Clash

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has admitted that his side is feeling some nerves ahead of their Carling Knockout Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

Despite the team’s impressive run to the final, which included victories over Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy, and Richards Bay, Larsen recognizes the significant challenge posed by the defending league champions.

Magesi will not be the favorite to bring a might like Sundowns, as they have won the Betway Premiership title for the last seven years and they have accumulated plenty of experience in knowing how to handle this occasion.

“I think firstly when you talk about the mood, coming off a win, even though there has been a two-week break, always create an air of positivity around the club,” said Larsen.

“So, that’s been the case. Ater our win against Richards Bay, the spirit has been good and we have managed to rest the players a bit and focus on this week’s preparation for Sundowns looking at our match strategy.

“But in terms of the mood, we are very happy and the players look relaxed even though they are some nerves, some anxiousness which is normal because 90 percent of these boys have never played in the game of this magnitude.

“So, it’s normal to have a big of anxiety. But that’s why we are here for as coaches and senior players to as well calm them down and just get them to relax as much as possible and enjoy the occasion.”

Larsen dismissed the notion that Sundowns have little rested as they had many players on international duty with Bafana Bafana and other nations during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. He added that, after all, they have quality players all around to choose from.

“I disagree 1000 percent (that we have slight) advantage,” said Larsen.

“Sundowns, for the last 10 years, have mastered the art of playing every three days and they have been winning. So, what is going to change this time around?”

Despite the daunting task ahead, Magesi will be hoping to cause an upset and claim their first major trophy.
