Broos Faces Tough Squad Selection As Bafana Bafana Looks To The Future

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is set to face a challenging task when selecting his squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers in September.

After a successful international break in June, where the team played two friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique without Mamelodi Sundowns players, Broos admitted that choosing the final squad in September will be difficult.

“Let me be honest with you, this will be a tough job for me because the choice will be difficult as well,” Broos said.

“You know, Mamelodi Sundowns players, they all played an important role in the past. But I also said that it’s not only about Sundowns players, and little by little, the team became older.

“I think for the moment when I saw the selection for March, I think there were 12 or 13 players around 30 years and over. So, that means that it’s time to start little by little to get the team younger, and this is what we saw now.”

Broos is aware that he will have to make some tough decisions when it comes to selecting the final squad.

“Ok, we have to drop others, but I’ve never been afraid to drop players. So, we’ll see what we can do in the next months and certainly for the important games in September and October.”

Bafana managed to win against Mozambique and drew against Tanzania, showcasing the depth of talent in the squad.

Broos is now looking to the future, and his intention with the recent squad was to assess the performance of young players, according to him.

“You know this camp was for me to look for the young guys and how they could perform,” he added.

“I didn’t look whether we had to be better, I just looked at their performances. Some guys did well, and others did less, and others we can say maybe it was a little bit earlier to play for Bafana Bafana.”

Broos is pleased with what he saw from the young players and believes that the future of Bafana Bafana looks bright.

“That was the intention of this camp, I wanted them to show me, and they showed me. So, again, I think when you see today and players who have been with us before, the future of Bafana Bafana looks bright.”

As the former Cameroonian national team coach prepares for the World Cup qualifiers, he will also be keeping an eye on players participating in the COSAFA Cup in Free State. With a mix of experienced players and young talent, Broos will be working tirelessly to craft a squad that can bring success to South African football fans.

The challenge will be to balance the experience of established players with the talent and energy of younger players. With the right mix, Bafana Bafana could achieve great things in the qualifiers.
