Chiefs To Face Asante Kotoko In Toyota Cup In Durban

Kaizer Chiefs are set to take on Ghanaian powerhouse Asante Kotoko in the upcoming Toyota Cup, a match to be held at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium on 26 July.

This venue serves as Chiefs’ second alternative home ground, a role it has played for several years.

Kaizer Chiefs’ partnership with Toyota began in 2021, with the automotive giant featuring as a sleeve sponsor. Toyota’s main South African operations are based in Prospecton, just south of Durban.

The Toyota Cup was launched last season as a three-year tournament, and this upcoming match will mark its second edition. Last year’s inaugural event saw Chiefs suffer a 4-0 defeat to Tanzanian side Young Africans at Toyota Stadium.

“We are honoured to welcome our friends from Ghana to South African soil. Asante Kotoko are part of our shared history. The Toyota Cup allows Africa to unite through football and is a celebration of our legacy. Durban is not only the manufacturing hub of Toyota South Africa, but a perfect place to write the next chapter of our history after winning the Nedbank Cup in May at the Moses Mabhida Stadium,” says Jessica Motaung, Marketing and Commercial Director at Kaizer Chiefs.

“Mobility, possibility, and connection are not just pillars of this tournament – they are core to who we are at Toyota,” says Tasneem Lorgat, General Manager of Marketing and Communications at Toyota South Africa Motors. “The Toyota Cup brings people together, creates unforgettable moments, and celebrates the rich football heritage of our continent. It perfectly embodies this year’s theme: Africa Unites.”

Asante Kotoko are one of Africa’s most decorated clubs with 50 official trophies including two CAF Champions League titles.

“It is with great joy and anticipation that we come to South Africa for the 2025 edition of the Toyota Cup. Football has always been a powerful bridge between people and nations, and this event shows what is possible when sport is supported by vision and purpose. We are proud to be part of this celebration of African unity and commend Toyota and Kaizer Chiefs for setting the standard for what African football can be,” says Edmund Awuah Asafu-Adjaye (Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awuah), Chairman of Asante Kotoko SC.

Chiefs added: “Toyota Cup is once again going to be a fun-filled extravaganza for football enthusiasts as there will be many activities for fans to engage in throughout the day. Music concert will take place courtesy of SAB at 10h00 to wet everyone’s appetite before a mouth-watering curtain raiser between the Kaizer Chiefs Legends & Zulu Kingdom Legends at 12:00, which will include icons such as Doctor Khumalo, Sibusiso Zuma, Jabu Mahlangu, Delron Buckley and more.”

This fixture of Chiefs and Kotoko will be a reunion for the two clubs, who last met in 2001 during the Vodacom Challenge, also held in Durban, with Chiefs winning on penalties.

Both Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, having each won their respective domestic FA Cups.

Notably, Chiefs secured their spot by winning the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May, defeating arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.
