Da Gama Departs Magesi, Linked To Durban City

Sportswire can exclusively confirm that Owen da Gama has left Magesi football club with immediate effect.

Da Gama joined Magesi in December, stepping in for Clinton Larsen, who had resigned in the same month.

Larsen’s departure was notable, as he had not only guided the club to promotion into the Betway Premiership but also made history in November by leading them to the Carling Knockout title, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

When Da Gama took the helm, Magesi was at the bottom of the league table. He successfully steered the team to a 13th-place finish in the Betway Premiership, even earning the Coach of the Month award for March. During his tenure, the former Orlando Pirates coach oversaw 20 matches, securing seven wins and eight losses.

While Da Gama’s deal with Magesi was set to expire at the end of the season, initial talks regarding an extension seemed promising. However, the parties ultimately failed to agree on certain terms, leading to the former Bafana Bafana assistant coach’s departure.

Sportswire has learned that Da Gama might be headed to Durban City, a club that recently gained promotion at the end of last season. Durban City is currently without a coach after Simo Dladla resigned to become an assistant coach at Usuthu. Dladla, who had also led Durban City to promotion, could not agree on new terms with the club, which was rebranded from Maritzburg United at the start of the season.
