Al Ahly Axe Riveiro Amid Disappointing Results
Al Ahly has parted ways with former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro, effective immediately.
The Spanish tactician’s tenure with the Egyptian giants was marked by disappointment, despite his high-profile appointment in May.
Riveiro had requested to be released early from his contract with Orlando Pirates before the end of last season, a move that raised eyebrows at the time.
Riveiro’s stint with Al Ahly began with a lackluster performance in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where the Red Devils played three games, losing one to Palmeiras and drawing the other two against Porto and Inter Miami.
In the Egyptian Premier League, Riveiro’s side managed just one win in four games, with two draws and a 2-0 loss to Pyramids, the African champions, on Saturday.
The loss to Pyramids seemed to be the final nail in the coffin, leading to Riveiro’s being sacked. Riveiro, who won five trophies in three seasons with Pirates, replaced Marcelo Koller.
The Red Devils will now need to find a new coach to lead them back to winning ways and restore their reputation on the continent.
With a new coach at the helm, Al Ahly will look to regroup and refocus its efforts on reclaiming its status as a dominant force in Egyptian and African football.
