SAFA Secures R82 Million For VAR Implementation In PSL

The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has confirmed it has allocated R82 million for the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in South African football.

Key Milestones and Funding Allocation

The department stated that the funds will enable the “swift development of a comprehensive project plan, training programmes for referees and officials, technology selection, stadium assessments, and the establishment of a VAR Training Centre.”

A portion of the budget is also dedicated to improving stadium connectivity, which will not only support the VAR system but also enhance safety measures, such as locating missing children.

During the SA Sports Awards, Minister Gayton Mckenzie had previously stated that the project was now in the hands of the South African Football Association (SAFA).

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) emphasized the importance of VAR for the integrity and fairness of the game, citing questionable refereeing decisions.

According to the department’s statement, significant progress has been made in collaboration with SAFA and the Premier Soccer League (PSL), including:

  • Request for Proposals (RFP): A formal request for VAR technology has been published, and responses have been received from potential providers.
  • FIFA Compliance: The project is aligned with FIFA’s Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP).
  • Dedicated Team: SAFA has committed to appointing a dedicated VAR Project Team to ensure a smooth rollout.

Stakeholder Buy-in and Urgency

While Minister McKenzie is a strong proponent of VAR, its implementation has not been met with widespread public excitement from SAFA and the PSL, who have been notably quiet on the matter. The two organizations are known to have a strained relationship.

“We commend SAFA’s dedication to this process and their prioritisation of transparency and FIFA compliance.

“These measures will undoubtedly contribute to the successful rollout of VAR, enhancing the integrity and quality of our domestic competitions. The nation is eagerly awaiting the delivery of this system, especially as we continue to see questionable decisions by referees during matches.

“The Department remains fully supportive and looks forward to continued collaboration with SAFA and the PSL.”

The department’s statement concluded by saying the investment “underscores the Government of National Unity’s commitment to elevating South African football to international standards.”
