Broos Challenges Mbule To Prove Himself Ahead Of AFCON

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has thrown down the challenge to Sipho Mbule, insisting it is up to the midfielder to prove he deserves a place in the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) in Morocco later this year.

Mbule, who struggled with personal problems during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns, was released at the end of last season before Orlando Pirates snapped him up.

Since joining the Buccaneers, Mbule has rediscovered his form, playing a pivotal role in their historic fourth consecutive MTN8 title triumph.

His resurgence earned him a recall to the national team in September, where he featured in Bafana Bafana’s 3-0 win over Lesotho and the 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Broos has once again included the midfielder in his squad for this month’s crucial qualifiers against Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October and Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on 14 October.

“I told him, Sipho, this is your second chance—don’t waste it,” said Broos during the squad announcement on SABC Sport.

“He’s a player with huge talent, but his career hasn’t reflected that. Now he has the opportunity to show his quality again, and it could help us enormously going into AFCON.”

Mbule to Fill the Gap Left by Injured Themba Zwane

With Themba Zwane once again sidelined through injury, Mbule is expected to step into the advanced midfield role. Zwane also missed the September qualifiers, giving Mbule another chance to cement his place as a long-term option.

Broos added: “Let’s hope Themba returns soon, but in the meantime, Mbule has the chance to prove himself. If he stays disciplined and consistent, he can be very important for us.”

Bafana Under Pressure in World Cup Qualifiers

South Africa enter these qualifiers under intense pressure after being docked three points by FIFA for fielding ineligible midfielder Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho in March. Mokoena should have been suspended after receiving two yellow cards.

The sanction has pushed Bafana Bafana down to second place in Group C, with Benin now leading on goal difference. Only group winners automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico, while the four best runners-up will enter a playoff round.

A Defining Moment for Mbule and Bafana

For Mbule, these upcoming matches could determine not only his future with Bafana Bafana but also his inclusion in the squad for AFCON 2025. For Broos and his team, victories against Zimbabwe and Rwanda are non-negotiable if they are to keep the World Cup dreams alive.
