Komphela Urges Sundowns Fans To Move On

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has called on the club’s supporters to put the disappointments of the 2025 behind them and shift their focus to the second round of the 2025/26 campaign.
Sundowns endured an uncharacteristically slow start to the season, particularly for a side that returned from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after delivering impressive performances on the global stage.
Despite boasting one of the strongest squads in South African football, the Tshwane giants suffered early exits from the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout Cup.
As defending Betway Premiership champions, Sundowns currently sit second on the league table with 26 points from 13 matches, trailing log leaders Orlando Pirates by two points, having played a game more.
Pirates lead the Betway Premiership standings with 28 points from 12 games and compounded Sundowns’ frustrations by also lifting both domestic cup competitions last season.
Sundowns’ inconsistent form has not only allowed Pirates to assert their dominance but has also had an impact on national team selection. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos named only five Sundowns players in his latest squad after the club had previously formed the backbone of the national team.
“The show goes on in 2026. Looking back at 2025, I choose to forget what happened yesterday and focus on what lies ahead,” Komphela said.
“Let’s welcome all Masandawana back to 2026. Whatever has been, has been. Whatever will be, we can at least dictate the terms.
“Let’s approach this part of the season with hope, vigour, excitement and commitment.”
Sundowns will resume their Betway Premiership campaign when they host Orbit College at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on 20 January.
