Makhaula Believes Pirates’ Winning Mentality Can Down Downs

Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula has expressed strong confidence ahead of Wednesday night’s Betway Premiership top-of-the-table showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium, insisting belief and a positive mindset give the Buccaneers the edge.

Pirates go into the highly anticipated clash sitting at the summit of the league standings with 38 points after 16 matches, holding a six-point advantage over second-placed Sundowns, who have accumulated 32 points from 15 games and still have one match in hand.

The encounter could play a decisive role in shaping the title race as the Soweto giants look to end a league drought stretching back to the 2011/12 season, while the Brazilians chase a remarkable ninth consecutive championship after dominating the competition for nearly a decade.

“I think it all goes because of a belief, because if you don’t believe that you will do something, then you will not go to do it,” Makhaula said.

“If you are going to war, then you’re scared, and then you will get killed. But if you’re going to war ready and your mind is positive and everything is in order, then definitely you’re 95% sure that you’re going to win that war.

“So, I think the boys are ready, and there’s nothing that I can say or not say because you can see the mood in the dressing room and after that game on Saturday.”

The former AmaZulu midfielder also pointed to the atmosphere within the squad as further proof that the team is mentally prepared for one of the biggest matches of the season.

“I think everyone is really for this fixture and the mood is ok, everyone is laughing,” Makhaula added.

“I think this is because of the three points we got on Saturday, so the mood is a little bit high.

“I can see the smile on everyone, and seeing our fans happy, that’s what we’ll do, and even the young boys are not shaking, meaning everyone is ready.”

The two sides have already met three times this season, underlining how closely matched they are.

Their league meeting in Pretoria in November ended in a 1-1 draw, while their MTN8 Cup semi-final first and second legs both finished level before Pirates advanced on penalties.

With Sundowns having set the standard in recent years and Pirates eager to reclaim past glory, Wednesday night’s clash presents not only a battle for three points but also a significant psychological contest between two title contenders.
