Galaxy Brush Aside Jacksa Spears To Reach Nedbank Cup Semi-Finals

TS Galaxy brushed aside Jacksa Spears with a 2–0 victory at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Sunday to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Galaxy entered the clash as overwhelming favourites against the ABC Motsepe League side from the Northern Cape, given their pedigree of having won the competition in 2019 and their current status as a Betway Premiership club.

However, Tim Sukazi’s side did not have it easy, as Spears showed resilience and discipline, closing spaces and making it difficult for Galaxy to break them down.

Ultimately, two lapses in concentration proved costly for the visitors, as they gifted both goals to the home side.

Galaxy opened the scoring through Igor Salatiel in the 34th minute, who was left unmarked in the box and headed home Patrick Fischer’s cross at the near post.

Spears nearly found an equaliser shortly afterwards, but Galaxy goalkeeper Ira Tape came to the rescue after his defence was easily split open by the ABC Motsepe League outfit.

Galaxy doubled their lead in the 58th minute thanks to another costly mistake from Spears.

Tshepo Kakora, who joined the club during the January transfer window from Magesi, capitalised on a defensive error by Siyabonga Radebe, dispossessing him before calmly finishing to give the home side a two-goal cushion.

This year’s Nedbank Cup is wide open following the early exits of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, who have dominated the competition over the past five seasons.

Galaxy had already shown their credentials earlier in the tournament by knocking out Sundowns in the round of 16 at the same venue in KwaMhlanga, winning by the same 2–0 scoreline.

The Rockets now join Milford and Casric Stars in the semi-finals after the two Motsepe Foundation Championship sides shocked Betway Premiership teams Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu respectively on Saturday.

The final quarter-final match will see Golden Arrows host city rivals Durban City at King Zwelithini Stadium later on Sunday.

The Nedbank Cup semi-final draw is scheduled to take place on Monday night.
