From Durban City To Naturena: The “Telepathic” Midfield Duo Reshaping Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has highlighted the growing influence of Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe, praising the duo’s chemistry and their key role in reshaping Amakhosi’s midfield this season.
The pair reunited at Naturena at the start of the current campaign, marking another chapter in a partnership that has developed over several years.
Ndlovu and Maboe first built their understanding at Durban City—then known as Maritzburg United—between 2016 and 2018, where their midfield synergy attracted national attention. Their paths later diverged, with Maboe joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 and Ndlovu moving to Orlando Pirates in 2019.
Last season, they briefly crossed paths again at SuperSport United, where Maboe featured on loan.
Now at Chiefs, the duo appear to have rediscovered their rhythm. Ndlovu has contributed two goals, one assist, and a Man of the Match award, while Maboe—despite not registering goals or assists—has been one of the standout performers, earning five Man of the Match accolades.
Their growing influence was evident again in Chiefs’ 1–1 draw against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Sunday, where both players delivered composed performances in a high-pressure encounter.
“I think both Ndlovu and Maboe are showing a good combination, and they know each other,” Ben Youssef said.
“Their movement shows that they understand how to play football and how to move effectively.
“The most important thing is that they are both intelligent players who contribute positively both defensively and offensively.”
Beyond the midfield, the Tunisian tactician also reserved special praise for captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, whose performance stood out.
Ben Youssef believes the shot-stopper, along with Maboe, Thabiso Monyane, and Bradley Cross, deserve national recognition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I think it is not only Petersen who did well. We had five or six players putting the coach under pressure when it comes to selection, and it will be a tough decision,” he added.
“Petersen played very well, and even before his injury, he was showing strong performances. He is working closely with his goalkeeper coach, Ilyes Mzoughi, and in my opinion, he deserves a place in the national team.
“I also think Thabiso Monyane, Cross, and Maboe deserve national call-ups. I believe it is time for Kaizer Chiefs players to be included in the national team.”
Amakhosi will now turn their attention to their next league assignment against Siwelele at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday, where Ndlovu and Maboe—alongside Petersen, Cross, and Monyane—will aim to maintain their fine form while pushing for national team selection.
