Julius Smashes Benetton As Sharks Dominate In Durban

The Sharks continued their strong home form with a commanding 46-7 victory over Benetton Rugby at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, strengthening their position above the Italian side on the United Rugby Championship table.

After a scrappy opening quarter, the Sharks steadily asserted control and dominated all facets of play for the remainder of the encounter, turning the contest into one-way traffic.

It was a performance of ruthless efficiency from the home side, with Zekhethelo Siyaya showing maturity beyond his years in general play, while Jurenzo Julius stole the spotlight with a clinical hat-trick in a completely dominant display.

Both sides created promising opportunities in the opening 10 minutes, but neither could capitalise as the final pass or decisive phase of play let them down at crucial moments.

The Sharks opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a slick attacking movement. A sharp break and well-timed support run from scrumhalf Bradley Davids set up the returning Jaco Williams, who produced a spectacular chicken-wing pass to send the onrushing Edwill van der Merwe over for a superb team try.

Teenage sensation Siyaya was unable to add the extras, pulling his conversion attempt wide as the Sharks led 5-0.

From there, the Sharks began to build sustained pressure, spending long periods inside the Benetton half and 22. Their territorial dominance eventually paid off when Julius powered over the try line, leaving the Benetton defence grasping at air.

Siyaya again missed the conversion, meaning the Sharks moved into double figures without adding points from the tee.

The Sharks then made full use of their numerical advantage after Bautista Bernasconi was sent to the sin bin for a late challenge on Vincent Koch, with Siya Kolisi finishing from the resulting driving maul to extend the lead.

Davids then took over the goal-kicking duties from Siyaya, but he too was unable to find consistency as the Sharks’ struggles from the tee continued to undermine an otherwise dominant display.

Just as Bernasconi was preparing to return to the field, Benetton were reduced to 14 men again after a dangerous head-to-shoulder collision on Makazole Mapimpi. Play was delayed while Mapimpi received medical treatment before being stretchered off, while Jacob Umaga was shown a yellow card, which was later upgraded to a 20-minute red card.

Sensing an opportunity, the Sharks raised the intensity and fed off the momentum. Siyaya, combining youthful exuberance with remarkable composure, dictated play before delivering a precise pass to Van der Merwe, who stepped past three defenders to score.

Siyaya resumed kicking duties, but despite the Sharks’ dominance, the scoreline could have been far harsher had they converted more opportunities from the tee, with the 20-0 half-time lead failing to fully reflect their control.

HALF-TIME: SHARKS 20-0 BENETTON

The Sharks’ momentum continued early in the second half as the powerful André Esterhuizen bulldozed his way over the try line just three minutes after the restart.

There was relief among the home supporters when Davids finally found his range from the tee, calmly slotting the conversion to make it 27-0.

After a spell of slick handling and incisive line breaks, Julius crossed for his second try just before the hour mark before completing his hat-trick moments later, this time finishing off strong work from Esterhuizen.

Regular fly-half Jean Smith made no mistake with either conversion as the Sharks continued their relentless onslaught, stretching the score to 41-0.

Benetton eventually grabbed a consolation try when a bloodied Cristiano Tizzano dived over, with Alessandro Garbisi adding the conversion. However, the wily Litelihle Bester had the final say as he crossed for the last points of the game.

Despite narrowly missing out on the half-century mark, the Sharks will be pleased with another emphatic home victory, delivered in front of a vocal crowd as they capped off a commanding performance.
