Williams Defends Bafana Formation After World Cup Loss To Mexico

Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has dismissed claims that South Africa’s tactical system cost them their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener, insisting the squad had thoroughly analyzed Mexico ahead of the 2-0 defeat.

South Africa surprised many fans at the Estadio Azteca by deploying an unfamiliar setup, starting with two frontline strikers while shifting into a back five out of possession.

The opening-day loss leaves Bafana Bafana rooted to the bottom of Group A. However, Hugo Broos’ side has an immediate opportunity to revive their campaign with crucial fixtures against Czechia and South Korea on the horizon.

South Korea moved into second place in the group after coming from behind to defeat Czechia 2-1 on Friday morning.

Williams maintained that the structural shift was not to blame for the result, stressing that the technical team had prepared extensively for the Mexican threat.

“Obviously, when we analysed them, most of the games they played over the last year were with a back five as well, a 3-5-2,” said Williams.

“So we wanted to go with a similar approach but have an extra player in midfield. Obviously, they changed, and that’s football. They came with a back four, and that’s what we had to figure out during the game. We had to go man-to-man.

“But at this level, you have to recognise those changes as quickly as possible and adapt. It’s a tough lesson to take, but I don’t think it had anything to do with the formation.

“We trained all week, we analysed them, we studied them, and we had a good game plan.”

Bafana Bafana will look to bounce back from the disappointing start when they face Czechia in a must-win clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Thursday.
