Broos Questions Zwane Red Card

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has questioned the red card issued to Themba Zwane during South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener on Thursday, admitting he was unconvinced by the referee’s decision.

Zwane, who was introduced as a second-half substitute, received the first red card of his international career after striking Gilberto Mora in the 84th minute.

His dismissal left Bafana Bafana playing with nine men, following Yaya Sithole’s earlier sending-off for a trip in the 49th minute.

Replays showed that Mora had body-checked Zwane to block the Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, who then retaliated by elbowing the Mexican youngster. Notably, Mora is the youngest player in this tournament and the second-youngest to ever appear in a World Cup, behind only Brazilian legend Pelé, who debuted in the 1958 tournament at age 17.

Mexico was also reduced to ten men later in the match when César Montes launched an awful challenge on Khuliso Mudau just outside the box, prompting Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio to flash a straight red card.

Speaking to SABC Sport after the match, Broos expressed his doubts over Zwane’s dismissal.

“The second red card, I’m not sure,” Broos said. “I think it was the Mexican player who blocked Zwane, and the referee saw it differently. But I don’t think it was a red card for Themba.”

A Historic Disappointment

The defeat marks one of Bafana Bafana’s worst disciplinary and competitive performances in FIFA World Cup history, reminiscent of their 3-0 loss to France in 1998.

The match also entered the tournament record books for all the wrong reasons:

  • A Rare Shield of Reds: Only four red cards were shown in the entire 2022 World Cup in Qatar, yet this single opening match produced three. A trio of red cards had never previously been issued in a World Cup opening game.
  • Disciplinary Meltdown: South Africa became the first team to receive two red cards in a single World Cup match since the infamous 2006 “Battle of Nuremberg” clash between Portugal and the Netherlands, where both sides had two players sent off.

How the Match Unfolded

It was a nerve-wracking start for Bafana Bafana. Sithole was dispossessed early on, allowing Mexico to take full advantage. Julián Quiñones drilled a powerful strike past Ronwen Williams in just the ninth minute to open the scoring. Williams stood no chance as the South African defense was left completely disorganized.

Inevitably, El Tri doubled their lead in the second half. Roberto Alvarado showcased brilliant technique to deliver a lofted cross into the box. Raúl Jiménez met the delivery at the back post, guiding a header into the bottom-left corner in the 67th minute to seal the victory.

Looking ahead, Bafana Bafana will need to quickly regroup before they face the Czech Republic next Thursday.

Reflecting on the harsh officiating, Broos concluded: “Those are the rules. Let’s hope that in the next games, the rules are not applied the way they were on Thursday, and let’s also hope other teams suffer from red cards.”
