Belgium Club Close To Signing Mofokeng

According to reports out of Belgium, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise is closing in on the signing of Relebohile Mofokeng.

The Nieuwsblad website indicates that Saint-Gilloise is on the verge of reaching a club-to-club agreement with Orlando Pirates. The Belgian outfit has reportedly offered Mofokeng a four-year contract, and the attacking midfielder is expected to travel directly from the US to Belgium to finalize the move.

The 21-year-old featured in three of Bafana Bafana’s four matches at the FIFA World Cup, where the national team made history by reaching the knockout stages. Mofokeng played the game of his life as Bafana secured a memorable victory over South Korea in their final group match.

However, he was substituted at halftime during Bafana Bafana’s heartbreaking 1-0 Round of 32 loss to co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday.

That exit has not deterred Royale Union Saint-Gilloise from pursuing Mofokeng, who has long been a target for overseas clubs. He enjoyed a standout campaign last term, helping the Buccaneers secure a treble, which included their first Betway Premiership title in 14 years.

In his 27 appearances last season, he scored 10 goals and provided eight assists, making him the odds-on favorite to win the PSL Footballer of the Season award.

Overall, the playmaker has racked up 125 appearances for Pirates, netting 29 times and registering 31 assists.

If Mofokeng completes the move to Union, he will become the second South African to represent the club. Percy Tau previously enjoyed a loan spell there during the 2018/19 season after joining Brighton & Hove Albion from Mamelodi Sundowns.

At the time, Tau was unable to secure a UK work permit because Bafana Bafana fell outside the top 50 in the FIFA rankings and lacked the tournament participation points required for English Premiership entry.

Union is owned by British businessman Tony Bloom, who is also the chairman of Brighton—a connection that allowed Tau to gain the European playing experience necessary to eventually play in England.

Union Saint-Gilloise heads into the new era on a high, having recently won the Belgian league title in the 2024/25 season, breaking a decades-long top-flight title drought for the historic Brussels club.
