Jordaan And SAFA To Evaluate Broos’ Succession Plan

South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan has confirmed that the federation will formally convene to evaluate the future of outgoing Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

Jordaan was addressing a packed press conference at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday morning as the national team touched down from their historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

While Broos previously reiterated his intention to retire from active coaching at the tournament’s conclusion, the veteran tactician threw a curveball by revealing he remains open to a less demanding role within the association. Having spent 55 years in professional football as both a player and manager, the 74-year-old indicated he does not envisage patrolling the touchline at 78 years old for the 2030 World Cup.

“We are back home, and we are going to evaluate our performance in the tournament. We’ll talk about it,” Jordaan told reporters.

“We’re going to tell you about the next phase of South African football, and we’re hopeful that we’ll continue on this upward trend.

“We need to talk to Hugo Broos, and we will let you know after that conversation. But to all of you here, thanks for coming. Thank you.”

Broos departs having permanently etched his name into South African football folklore. Under his guidance, Bafana Bafana advanced to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in history.

Furthermore, at 74 years and 75 days old, the Belgian mastermind officially broke the record as the oldest head coach to win a match in FIFA World Cup history, eclipsing the previous milestone set by Uruguay’s legendary Oscar Tabárez at Russia 2018.

As the post-Broos era begins, political and editorial pressure is already mounting on SAFA. Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie publicly intervened on Thursday, urging the association not to overcomplicate the transition and demanding that Pitso Mosimane be appointed immediately.

High-level sources have informed Sportswire that the currently unattached Mosimane is indeed SAFA’s primary target. Crucially, the master tactician is prepared to package his return with former Golden Arrows mentor Manqoba Mngqithi as his assistant coach.

The blockbuster reunion would bring together a legendary coaching partnership. Mosimane and Mngqithi spent eight trophy-laden years together at Mamelodi Sundowns between 2012 and 2020, famously capturing the 2016 CAF Champions League and the subsequent CAF Super Cup.

Should SAFA finalize the deal, it would mark Mosimane’s second stint in the hot seat. He previously served as an assistant from 2007 to 2010 before succeeding Carlos Alberto Parreira as head coach following the 2010 World Cup, a role he held until 2012.

Mosimane’s departure followed an intense 1-1 draw against Ethiopia in a World Cup qualifier at Royal Bafokeng Stadium
