McKenzie Backs Mosimane To Replace Broos

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has officially endorsed Pitso Mosimane to succeed Hugo Broos as Bafana Bafana head coach, urging the South African Football Association (SAFA) to halt its shortlisting process following South Africa’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage run.

Mosimane’s name has been widely touted as the leading contender to take over from Broos, who has overseen a remarkable turnaround of the South African national team and restored pride among the country’s football supporters.

Broos’ future with Bafana remains uncertain after the Belgian tactician indicated that he intends to retire following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Since taking charge, Broos has enjoyed an impressive spell, guiding Bafana to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and leading the team to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in years.

Sportswire understands that Mosimane has emerged as the leading candidate being considered by the South African Football Association (SAFA) to replace Broos when the time comes.

McKenzie believes SAFA should stop overcomplicating the process and appoint Mosimane to lead Bafana into its next chapter.

“You know the problem with us South Africans sometimes, we complicate very uncomplicated things,” McKenzie told SABC Sport on Thursday morning as Bafana returned from the World Cup.

“I’ve been listening to SAFA saying they are shortlisting different coaches. There’s no different coach; there’s one coach who must lead Bafana Bafana, and that is Pitso Mosimane. Let’s stop trying to complicate things. The next coach of Bafana Bafana should be Pitso Mosimane.

“We need someone who understands our boys, someone who has been supporting Hugo Broos. What more do you want Pitso to do? I’ve put my weight behind Pitso Mosimane as the Minister of Sport.”

McKenzie believes Mosimane is the right man to build on the progress made under Broos.

“We have seen how France plays; they play their own brand of football. Going forward, we are going to unearth a lot of players, and Pitso is the coach who must take Bafana forward. We love Hugo Broos, and he told us that if he decides to stay, he would hand over to Pitso. But I keep hearing all these other names being mentioned.”

McKenzie added that he has already discussed the matter with SAFA president Danny Jordaan and the association’s technical committee chairperson, insisting that the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is the ideal candidate.

“I’ve had conversations with Danny Jordaan, the chairperson of the technical committee and Pitso. Pitso has received many offers, and I’m the one who told him not to take them. We need Pitso now. You can see that man has a plan,” said McKenzie.
