Nwabali Error Allows Sundowns To Steal Point Against Chippa United

Antonio Van Wyk scored a dramatic late equaliser as Mamelodi Sundowns rescued a point against Chippa United in their Betway Premiership clash at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday evening.

It was a bitterly disappointing ending for Chippa, who were on the verge of securing their first-ever league victory over Sundowns. The Eastern Cape side had defended their lead deep into stoppage time, only to see their hopes of claiming all three points disappear with virtually the final kick of the game.

Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali failed to deal with the ball, which fell kindly into the path of Van Wyk. The Sundowns attacker made no mistake, rifling the ball into the back of the net in the 94th minute to snatch a draw for the visitors.

Chippa chairman Siviwe Mpengesi, who was seated in the VIP box, and coach Brandon Truter in the dugout, was left visibly frustrated as his side were denied what would have been their first league victory of the season.

The result will be particularly painful for Chippa given how close they came to ending Sundowns’ dominance in this fixture. Instead, the defending champions showed their resilience once again to avoid defeat.

Following the draw, Sundowns will now take a break from Betway Premiership action as they turn their attention to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The Brazilians will begin preparations for their clash against Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli Saudi next weekend, with the match scheduled to take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
