In-Form Ngwenya Leads the Way: Four South African-Based Stars Named In Zim AFCON Squad

Zimbabwe national team coach Ramon Catala has announced a 24-man squad for the Warriors’ opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone and DR Congo later this month, with four PSL-based players included.
The four players based in the PSL are Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, Mamelodi Sundowns defender Divine Lunga, Marumo Gallants forward Daniel Msendami and AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.
Ngwenya’s inclusion comes after his impressive start to the season. The AmaZulu forward is currently the Betway Premiership’s top goalscorer with seven goals and was also named the league’s Player of the Month for August.
Catala has selected Martin Mapisa and Nelson Chadya alongside Chipezeze as his three goalkeeping options.
In defence, Zimbabwe will have Lunga, Munashe Garananga, Corbin Mthunzi, Shane Maroodza, Sean Fusire, Emmanuel Jalai, Peter Muduhwa, Kevin Moyo and Isaac Mabaya.
The midfield options are Marshall Munetsi, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder, Andy Rinomhota, Abubakar Moffat, Marvelous Nakamba and Prosper Padera.
Up front, Catala has selected Ngwenya, Tawanda Chirewa, Bill Antonio, Msendami, Tawanda Maswanhise, former SuperSport United striker Prince Dube and Tino Kadewere.
The Warriors will begin their AFCON qualifying campaign against Sierra Leone on September 24 before returning home to face DR Congo on September 28, during the FIFA international break.
The upcoming matches will be Catala’s first competitive assignments as Zimbabwe head coach as he looks to guide the Warriors towards qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
