Amajita Crowned AFCON U20 Champions

Amajita, the South African U20 national team, has made history by winning the AFCON U20 2025 title, defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final at the 30 June Stadium on Sunday evening.

The match-winning goal was scored by 18-year-old Gomolemo Kekana in the 70th minute, a stunning shot from outside the box that sealed the victory for Amajita.

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating numerous chances in the first half.

Amajita started strong, with Jody Ahshene having two notable opportunities in the third and 17th minutes, only to be denied by Morocco goalkeeper Yanis Marty.

Morocco also had their fair share of chances, with Ilias Boumassaoudi taking a great shot in the 22nd minute, but Fletcher Lowe made an impressive save to keep the score goalless.

The first half ended 0-0, with both teams failing to capitalize on their chances.

In the second half, both teams came out strong, creating several opportunities, but it wasn’t until the 70th minute that Amajita broke the deadlock.

Kekana’s goal was initially flagged offside by the assistant referee, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, and the goal was awarded.

The introduction of captain Patrick Autata and Thabang Mahlangu by coach Raymond Mdaka in the 56th minute had a significant impact on Amajita’s attack, as they continued to press for a winner.

Morocco, on the other hand, had a chance to equalize in the 83rd minute, but Othmane Maamma’s header was poor, and Amajita goalkeeper Lowe was relieved.

As the final whistle blew, Amajita players erupted in joy, celebrating their historic win.

This is Amajita’s first-ever AFCON U20 title, and it’s a significant milestone for South African football.

Before this victory, Amajita, having gone this far, had qualified for the FIFA U20 World Cup, a testament to the growth of football in the country.

This achievement is not an isolated incident, as South African football has seen a surge in success across various age groups.

Amajimbosi (U17 team) has also qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup, while Bafana Bafana (senior men’s team) has qualified for the AFCON and has a chance to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Banyana Banyana (senior women’s team) has qualified for the WAFCON and had a remarkable run in the 2023 World Cup.

The AFCON U20 win is a sweet revenge for Amajita, who lost to Morocco in the 1997 final.

Coach Mdaka’s team has shown remarkable determination and skill, and this victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

As Amajita celebrates this historic win, the entire nation will be proud of their achievement and look forward to more success in the future.
