Amajita Squad Announced For The FIFA U-20 World Cup

Coach Raymond Mdaka has announced his 21-man Amajita squad for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile later this month.

Mdaka has kept a strong core of players who made history by winning the country’s first-ever AFCON junior title in Morocco in May.

Key Players and Squad Breakdown

The team is a mix of seasoned youth internationals and rising stars from top clubs. The squad is highlighted by standout players from the AFCON triumph, including:

  • Goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe: The shot-stopper was a crucial part of the team’s success and was recognized as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament. He currently plays for Estoril Praia in Portugal, bringing valuable international experience.
  • Defender Tylon Smith: Named the Player of the Tournament, Smith’s brilliant form earned him a move to QPR in England, showcasing the talent in this Amajita side.

The squad also features a strong contingent from the PSL’s biggest clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs players Sifiso Timba, Luke Baartman, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Takalani Mazhimba. From Mamelodi Sundowns, the team includes Asekho Tiwani—who has recovered from an injury he sustained during the AFCON tournament—along with Siyabonga Mabena, Gomolemo Kekana, and Kutlwano Letlhaku.

South Africa’s World Cup Challenge

Amajita will be one of four African nations at the tournament, alongside Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt, all of whom reached the AFCON junior semifinals.

South Africa has been drawn into Group E, where they will face a tough challenge against New Caledonia, France, and the USA.

Amajita’s World Cup schedule is as follows in Group E:

  • 29 September: vs. France
  • 3 October vs. New Caledonia
  • 5 October: vs. USA
