AmaZulu Boss Fumes Over Controversial Penalty in Nedbank Cup Loss

AmaZulu coach Pablo Franco Martin was livid following his side’s 4-2 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The central point of his anger stemmed from a controversial penalty awarded to Pirates for their second goal.

“Did you watch the game? Didn’t you see what happened?” Martin repeated his frustration on SuperSport TV after the match and again during a press conference that he abruptly ended due to his heightened emotions.

The loss marked another setback for Usuthu, who haven’t been able to defeat Pirates at the iconic venue since its reopening for domestic football after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, despite twice coming back from behind in this tightly contested encounter.

“Instead of talking about the amazing things we’re achieving, we’re discussing a result decided by people who lack basic human respect,” Martin vented his disappointment after the game.

When pressed by a journalist about whether he was specifically referring to referee Masixole Bambiso’s decision to award the penalty converted by Patrick Maswanganyi, Martin’s response was curt.

“I’m sorry my friend, I don’t want to be rude, but are you asking me seriously this question?”

Following a confirmation that the game was indeed watched, Martin concluded, “Then I don’t need to answer.”

This marked a significant departure from Martin’s usual demeanor. The press conference, unlike his typical sessions, lasted less than 10 minutes
