Appollis Demands More From Himself

Attacker Oswin Appollis has settled in seamlessly at the Orlando Pirates, but he insists he will not rest on his laurels as he pushes for continuous improvement.

Appollis, who joined Orlando Pirates from Polokwane City during the off-season, has been one of the club’s standout signings so far, alongside Tshepang Moremi – who arrived from AmaZulu.

The 24-year-old has featured in 21 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing six assists.

The former SuperSport United attacker has already helped deliver silverware for Pirates. He came off the bench in the MTN8 final in September to set up two goals scored by Moremi as Pirates beat Stellenbosch 3-0.

Despite his impressive displays, Appollis believes he has not yet reached his full potential.

“There is still a lot of work to be done,” said Appollis.

“Obviously, there has been improvement in the team — all the players the club signed. For me, it’s about continuing to do my job. With the quality players around me, it makes things easier and helps me grow as an individual.

“As you can see, I’m not the only one improving — many players are stepping up because of the depth and quality we have in the squad.”

Pirates climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership table over the weekend after beating Durban City 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

They now sit three points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who could reclaim top spot when they face Siwelele on Wednesday.

While Pirates will keep an eye on that fixture, their attention is shifting toward another cup final — the Carling Knockout — where they will meet Marumo Gallants at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

By the end of the year, Pirates and Appollis could have secured two knockout trophies in four months, something the club last achieved in the 2011/12 season.

The Buccaneers are eager to continue building on their recent success, having won five trophies over the past three campaigns.

“It is a special moment for me,” Appollis admitted.

“If you look at previous seasons, Orlando Pirates have always been in finals. As a team, we’ve been working hard to reach another one.

“So, I’m very happy.”
