Bafana Bafana Held To Frustrating Draw By Nigeria In World Cup Qualifier
Bafana Bafana were left disappointed after letting a first-half lead slip in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday.
Bafana Bafana dominated the first half, creating several scoring opportunities. Themba Zwane broke through the Nigerian defense with a dazzling run before firing past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali in the 29th minute, putting the South Africans deservedly ahead.
However, the second half saw a shift in momentum. Faruq Oluwafisayo equalized for Nigeria just one minute after the restart, holding off Mothobi Mvala’s challenge and unleashing a powerful shot past Ronwen Williams.
Bafana Bafana continued to threaten on the counter-attack, with Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau coming close to extending their lead. However, a combination of Nwabali’s saves and Bafana’s poor finishing kept the score level.
The introduction of Samuel Chikwueze provided more attacking impetus for Nigeria. His shot rattled the crossbar, showcasing the increased threat the Super Eagles posed in the later stages. Bafana also had a late chance go begging as they failed to capitalize on a promising attacking opportunity.
Both teams pushed for a winner in a stretched second half, but resolute defending on both sides ensured the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The draw keeps Lesotho at the top of Group C with five points, while Bafana Bafana dropped to fourth with four points after three matches. As it stand, it is one of the tightest groups in these World Cup qualifiers.
