Broos Eyes Crucial Win Against Zimbabwe In Tense World Cup Qualifying Group

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has set his sights on securing maximum points against Zimbabwe on Tuesday at Toyota Stadium, emphasizing the importance of the match due to the group’s tight standings.

Broos’ team was held to a 1-1 draw by Nigeria in an exciting FIFA World Cup qualifiers match at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday night. Bafana took the lead through a spectacular play by Themba Zwane, who dissected the Nigerian defense before firing a shot past Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Despite the draw, Bafana finds themselves in fourth place in Group C with four points after three matches, tied with Benin in third and Rwanda in second. Lesotho surprisingly leads the group with five points after defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 at Orlando Stadium on the same day.

“You see Lesotho is first in the group but imagine three or four years ago and you should say in the group like this Lesotho would be first, Nigeria will be fifth, everyone would laugh,” said Broos after the game in Nigeria.

“This is what is happening now in African football, and this is big difference. I was in the 2017 with Cameroon and now with South Africa in AFCON, this is big difference. All those little countries have progressed a lot.

“When you see this also in those little countries, they are not only local players, but they are also players who play abroad, they became stronger.

“So, if you talk about the gap, I don’t think there will be a gap until the last games, it will be tough until the last game.

“Every team will have to play for a victory, but it will not be easy. We are playing now on Tuesday against Zimbabwe; we need the three points. I will not be happy if we don’t win against Zimbabwe.

“But it is easy to say it here behind the microphones, but I know already on Tuesday it will be tough game again.”

While Bafana enjoys home advantage, Nigeria travels to face Benin at the neutral venue at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny Abidjan on Monday.
