Bafana Star Continues Dazzling Form In Cyprus

Bafana Bafana winger Mihlali Mayambela maintained his stellar performances as he was on target when Aris Limassol claimed the bragging rights in the Limassol derby to make it two goals in as many games.
Mayambela’s side secured a comfortable 4-0 victory at the expense of fellow South African Luther Singh’s club AEL Limassol. Aris completed a league double over their city rivals after winning 3-0 back in November last year away from home.
Yannick Arthur Gomis opened the scoring for the home side in the 23rd minute before the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Rafail Mamas was given his marching orders following a second bookable offense on the stroke of halftime.
The Bafana international doubled the lead eight minutes into the second half. Georgian international Giorgi Kvilitaia made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 69th minute, while Dennis Gaustad rounded up the scoring five minutes later.
The 28-year-old player, who is the younger brother of two-time South African champion with Orlando Pirates Mark Mayambela, has scored four goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances in the Cyprus topflight division.
Despite suffering a minor injury that ruled him out for one match last month, Mayambela remains motivated as three of his four league goals came in the last four matches in the Cyprus league – demonstrating his impact at the club.
Meanwhile, with the win, Aris Limassol has accumulated 55 points after 24 league encounters. The Limassol-based club extended their unbeaten run in the league to 15 games with their last defeat dating back to November 2024.
However, Mayambela’s club trails log leaders Pafos FC with three points, having played one game more.
On Monday, Pafos will travel to APOEL Nicosia, who frequently appear in the UEFA Europa Conference League and UEFA Europa League.
The Bafana international will be keen to clinch more trophies with Aris Limassol after he won the Cyprus championship with the club in the 2022/23 season before lifting the Super Cup in the 2023/24 campaign.
On the other hand, Singh’s team, AEL Limassol is on a horrible run of form as they lost five games on the trot in all competitions. Additionally, the 2022/23 league runners-up are on a 12-game winless streak as they last won a competitive football match in December 2024.
