Motsepe Foundation Championship log leaders Durban City were stunned with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Baroka FC, falling short to goals from Kabelo Kgositsile and David Mothipi at Global Stadium on Saturday.

The result is a setback to the KZN side’s promotional ambitions as they have lost twice in their last five matches. However, City received a major boost with other teams vying for automatic promotion dropping points on the same weekend.

Simo Dladla’s charges are four points clear at the summit of the second-tier standings, having collected 37 points after 19 matches played. In Rustenburg, second-placed Orbit College missed the chance to close the gap after playing out to a 2-2 draw against Casric Stars, who are unbeaten in four games.

Moreover, third-placed JDR Stars also failed to capitalize on the leaders’ slip-up as they were held to a goalless draw by the struggling Cape Town Spurs at Giant Stadium. The Tshwane-based outfit is winless in their last three matches.

In the midtable, Highbury returned to winning ways with a 5-1 thumping of promotion-chasing Milford FC at Gelvandale Stadium on Friday afternoon. The newly promoted side is currently in ninth place with 26 points amassed.

The Gqeberha club is level on points with eighth-placed Hungry Lions, who suffered a slender 1-0 defeat to Kruger United in Mpumalanga. Additionally, the University Of Pretoria has also gathered 26 points following their goalless stalemate against Venda FC in Vhembe.

Another Limpopo team Black Leopards lost 2-1 against Pretoria Callies at Dobsonville Stadium to remain on 26 points as well, while Callies took their points tally to 23 – seven points above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, the Urban Warriors are stagnant in 15th place and winless in their last four outings.

Bottom-placed Leruma United claimed an impressive 1-0 victory over Brandon Truter’s Upington City to make it two wins in the last five games and end Bafana Ba Gucci’s five-game unbeaten run.
