Chiefs Close In On Top Spot, Tshwane Clubs Suffer Setback

Kaizer Chiefs solidified their title quest with a 2-0 victory over in-form Sekhukhune United at Isak Steyl Stadium on Sunday, thanks to goals from the deadly duo of Neo Bohloko and Naledi Hlongwane to make it two successive wins.

The win saw Amakhosi remain within touching distance of the summit of the table as they trail Stellenbosch by two points, having played a game less. Chiefs have accumulated 42 points after 18 league outings.

While Vela Khumalo aims to deliver the first-ever reserve league championship at Naturena, Stellies is motivated to defend their crown as they claimed an impressive 3-0 victory at home against SuperSport United in a top-of-the-table affair.

The Cape Winelands outfit got their revenge after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Matsatsantsa last month. The defending champions are on a five-game unbeaten run ahead of their clash against Orlando Pirates in their next outing.

Meanwhile, Cape Town City halted another Tshwane side Mamelodi Sundowns in Western Cape and remains level on 38 points with their cross-town rivals SuperSport. A Cee-Jay Bezuidenhout double and Dhakier Lee’s strike secured maximum points for the Citizens in a 3-2 triumph.

Bezuidenhout is now the outright top goal scorer in the league with 14 goals, two ahead of Pirates’ Siphamandla Msezane, who didn’t get on the scoresheet as the Buccaneers edged Richards Bay 1-0 at Chatsworth Stadium.

Joseph Makhanya’s side made it three wins on the trot and ascended to fifth place with 34 points. On the other hand, Bernard Parker’s TS Galaxy snapped a six-game winless form after registering a 3-2 win over Golden Arrows, who have now lost four games in a row.

In Bloemfontein, Chippa United were not so hot for Gallant Marumo as they succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bahlabane Ba Ntwa – stretching their winless streak to 18 games. In Limpopo, Polokwane City registered their first win since November last year after a 1-0 victory at the expense of AmaZulu.
