Binkin Blasts Sundowns Over Maseko Treatment
Football agent Glyn Binkin has criticised Mamelodi Sundowns for keeping Thapelo Maseko at the club despite what he describes as heavy competition in the left attacking position.
Binkin says he hopes the 22-year-old winger will eventually secure a permanent move abroad, arguing that his opportunities at Sundowns are limited due to the depth in that position.
Maseko moved to AEL Limassol in Cyprus on loan from Sundowns during the January transfer window until the end of the season.
The South African international sought a move after Sundowns strengthened their wide attacking options by signing former Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng in the same transfer window.
Since arriving in Cyprus, the former SuperSport United attacker has made six appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
“All the best players want to play abroad. Specifically in that position at Sundowns, they have a lot of players,” said Binkin.
“It doesn’t really make sense to keep the player there for the sake of it. Hopefully, common sense prevails at the end of the season. But for now, he is a Sundowns player on loan at Limassol and we will reassess the situation.”
Binkin, who also represents Sundowns stars Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba, recently expressed frustration after the club rejected what he described as a “significant offer” for Mokoena during the January transfer window.
He added that Maseko has endured a difficult period due to limited game time since joining Sundowns from SuperSport at the start of the 2023/24 season.
Signed during Rulani Mokwena’s tenure, Maseko was named Player of the Tournament when Sundowns won the inaugural African Football League.
His performances also earned him a place in the South Africa national football team squad for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where Bafana Bafana finished third. He scored in South Africa’s 4-0 win over Namibia national football team during the group stage.
“He took a strain when he was not playing and kept being promised that he would get a chance,” said Binkin, who was the Bafana Bafana team manager when South Africa won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
“For me, it was not about the coach not selecting him. My issue was that if they are not giving him a chance, why not allow him to play somewhere else?
“He has now been given the opportunity to play in a European league to gain exposure, and he is still young.”
