Broos Reveals Why He Got Heated Against Nigeria Clash

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted that his intense desire to qualify for the FIFA World Cup made him “tense and nervous,” leading to a heated scuffle with the Nigeria technical team during Tuesday’s draw at Toyota Stadium.

The altercation began in the second half when Teboho Mokoena was on the receiving end of a bad tackle. Broos’s frustration boiled over, and it led to a confrontation between Bafana Bafana’s team manager, Vincent Tseka, and the Nigerian bench.

Broos and his coaching staff also got involved, prompting the referee to intervene and calm both sides down.

The Emotions of the Game

After the match, Broos explained his reaction. “That’s the emotions of the game,” he told Sportswire. “Sometimes, when I see pictures of what I’m doing, I’m telling myself to calm down. But yeah, you are nervous, you are tense.”

He also expressed frustration with the referee’s officiating, noting the disparity in yellow cards. “We got three yellow cards, Nigeria one, and that is not normal, I’m very sorry. That is not normal.”

Broos admitted his behavior was not ideal but said it was a result of his strong desire to win. “I reacted also. I don’t have to do that. I know that. But yeah, what do you want? I want to win, I want to go to America next year,” he said with a laugh.

Match Highlights and Qualification Hopes

Bafana Bafana took a deserved lead in the 25th minute when Nigeria captain William Ekong inadvertently scored an own goal under pressure from a cross of Mohau Nkota.

However, the Super Eagles equalized just before halftime through a header from Calvin Bassey.

The draw leaves Bafana Bafana at the top of Group C with 17 points after eight matches. Nigeria remains in third place with 11 points. Bafana Bafana can secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup with a win in one of their two remaining qualifiers next month.
