CAF Boost Sundowns And Stellenbosch

Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch have received a major boost as CAF has changed its inter-club registration regulations. Players who have played for other clubs in any CAF club competition can now be registered for the knockout stages.

Sundowns signed Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch during the January transfer window. The Bafana Bafana international was initially ineligible to play in the CAF Champions League knockout stages for Sundowns because he had featured in the Confederation Cup for Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch can now also register Lesiba Nku, who they signed from Sundowns. Nku was previously registered to play for the African giants in the Champions League group stages, but can now play for Stellenbosch in the Confederation Cup knockout stages.

This change aligns CAF’s regulations with UEFA’s, which allow clubs to register new players in the knockout stages even if those players participated in any competition for their previous club.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”), today changed the player registration Regulations of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, to allow football clubs to register a player, for the CAF Champions League or the CAF Confederation Cup, who has participated in either of these CAF Competitions, for another football club, within the same football season,” said CAF in a statement.

“By changing these Player Registration Regulations, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup Regulations are now similar to the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League Player Registration Regulations.

“The amendments to these Regulations will contribute to the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup becoming attractive and appealing to football fans, TV spectators and to sponsors and partners in Africa and worldwide.

“These changes may also improve the quality of the African football clubs that are participating in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 that will be held in the United States in June–July 2025.

“The CAF EXCO also took a resolution extending the Player Registration deadline of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup to 28 February 2025.”

Orlando Pirates, also in the Champions League quarterfinals, were unaffected by this change as they did not sign any players during the January transfer window.

The knockout stages of both competitions resume in March.
