Cardoso Criticises PSL Scheduling Ahead Of The Champions League Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has once again criticised the Premier Soccer League (PSL), saying it does not make sense for his side to play a league match just three days before a crucial clash against Stade Malien in the CAF Champions League on Friday.

Cardoso was speaking after Sundowns moved three points clear at the top of the Betway Premiership table following a comfortable 3–0 win over Orbit College at Olympia Park Stadium on Tuesday.

Sundowns broke the deadlock early in the second half, with Miguel Reisinho scoring in the 48th minute before Iqraam Rayners converted a penalty in the 60th minute to seal the victory.

However, the Brazilians now have only two days to recover before facing the Malian side in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday.

“We scored the first goal and immediately had to start thinking about what lies ahead,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV, referring to the substitutions he made later in the match.

“It is not jealousy, but it is what we have to do. I think today this is a little bit how football in South Africa works, and we are not pleased with the situation we were put in.

“It is clear. I think no one in South Africa should be able to play a Champions League match after playing a league match three days before. It is something South Africa has to think about.

“Everybody should be provided with the conditions to be successful internationally, and unfortunately we were not rewarded with that.

“With that said, we will stay strong and continue to fight. We are strong and people respect our strengths. It is what it is, and thank you very much.”

Sundowns faced a similar situation last season but still managed to overcome it, winning the league comfortably and reaching the final of the Champions League.

However, this season Cardoso may be feeling greater pressure, with Orlando Pirates raising their level and intensifying the race for the league title.
