Sundowns Brush Orbit Aside To Return To The Top Of Betway Premiership

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Betway Premiership log table after securing a comfortable 2–0 victory against Orbit College at Olympia Park Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The two goals for the Brazilians were scored by Miguel Reisinho and Iqraam Rayners in the second half. Rayners is now level with Junior Dion as the joint top goalscorers in the league with 10 goals each this season.

With this victory, Sundowns moved to 47 points, three points ahead of Orlando Pirates, who sit in second place. However, the situation could change on Wednesday when Pirates face Richards Bay at Orlando Amstel Arena.

The Brazilians started the game on the front foot, creating several scoring opportunities within the opening 20 minutes. They even found the back of the net through Rayners, but the goal was ruled out for offside by assistant referee Elphas Sitole.

Sundowns continued to dominate possession in the closing stages of the first half, but they were unable to break the resistance of Orbit, whose defenders remained solid at the back. As a result, the first half ended goalless, with both sides heading into the break at 0-0.

In the second half, the Brazilians struck early, scoring two goals within the first 20 minutes. The first came from Reisinho, who finished with a left-footed shot from a knockdown header by Nuno Santos, riffling into the net.

Shortly afterwards, Rayners doubled the lead by converting a penalty with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner after Ramahlwe Mphahlele fouled Khuliso Mudau inside the box.

Sundowns continued to search for more goals and kept Orbit under pressure for the rest of the game, giving them a very tough challenge. However, they were unable to add another goal, and the match ended 2–0 in their favour.

Following this victory, the Brazilians will now take a break from league action as they turn their attention to the CAF Champions League.

The Brazilians are set to face the Malian side, Stade Malien, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the first leg of the quarterfinal on Friday.
