Chiefs Controversially Beat Stellies To Reach The Nedbank Cup Semis

Kaizer Chiefs controversially booked themselves a place in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup following their 3-1 victory against Stellenbosch at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening. 

Chiefs’ goals were scored by the Angolan defender Inacio Miguel through a penalty in the first half, while Pule Mmodi scored the second goal in the 96th minute and Mfundo Vilakazi scored in the 100th minute. 

Chiefs’ goal came during the first half through the Angolan defender Miguel who scored from a penalty spot. This was Miguel’s third goal in this competition this season. Both Chiefs and Stellies started this game on a high foot as they were creating so many scoring opportunities. 

Fortunately, the Phefeni Glamour Boys got a penalty in the 20th minute as the Ivorian defender Ismaël Touré committed a handball inside the 18-yard box. The captain of the day, Miguel, made no mistake as he scored a great penalty, sending the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Sage Stephens, in the wrong direction. 

Five minutes after Miguel’s goal, the home side almost got a goal but Chumani Butsaka’s shot was skewed wide over the bar. Ashley Du Preez and Devin Titus got chances after 40 minutes from either side, unfortunately they didn’t capitalise with their chances. 

These two rivals started the first 10 minutes of the second half very well as the game was balanced. Ashley Cupido almost got a goal in the 55th but his header went over the bar. The home side were in control of the game after 55 minutes, dominating the game with many passes trying to equalise. 

Stellenbosch levelled the matters through Andre De Jong, who scored via the header in the 86th minute, which took a deflection from Miguel. However, out of nowhere, Mdu Shabalala’s corner saw Sage Stephens failing to handle the ball in the 96th minute and Pule Mmodi knocked it home from close range.

Referee Skhumbuzo Gasa blew for a goal, but he was overruled by his second assistant on the far side. However, Gasa upheld his decision to give it a goal. Stellies pushed the numbers forward in search of an equaliser and goalie Stephens joined the attack when they had the corner. However, it was cleared by Chiefs and Vilakazi ran through and he knocked the ball into an empty.

Following this victory, Nasreddine Nabi’s side joined their neighbours Orlando Pirates in the semi-final of this competition. 

The Buccaneers beat SuperSport United 5-4 on penalties at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was the third time Chiefs beat Stellies this season. The Phefeni Glamour Boys won two league games against Steve Barker’s side, home and away. 

Amakhosi will know on Sunday that which team they will face in the semifinal of Nedbank Cup. The draw will be conducted after Durban City and Marumo Gallants’ game at Chatsworth Stadium.
